General Description of Position
The Outdoor Ministries Director is responsible for fulfilling the mission of Pilgrim Lodge, an ACA Accredited Camp, providing leadership, management and oversight of the ministry. The Director provides leadership to and works collaboratively with the Pilgrim Lodge Leadership Team and Pilgrim Lodge constituents and stakeholders to create and fulfill the mission. The role includes leading sustainability initiatives; ensuring quality summer camp and retreat experiences; administrative management; securing and supervising volunteer and paid camp staff; oversight of facilities plan and staff; managing finances; developing and implementing fund raising and marketing plans. The Outdoor Ministries Director reports directly to the Conference Minister of the Maine Conference, UCC.

Qualifications
1. Mature adult with a deep Christian faith consistent with the core purpose and core values of the United Church of Christ.
2. Vision, energy and passion for camp and retreat ministry.
3. Relationship building skills to work with staff, volunteers, guests potential retreat partners.
4. Ability to lead change while implementing best practices for financial sustainability.
5. The ability to manage systems (financial and operational) and people.
6. Welcoming spirit of hospitality and drive for quality ministry.
7. Life experience with cultures other than one’s own.
8. Love of creation and commitment to sustainability.
9. Bachelor’s Degree in related area.

Essential Functions
1. Expectation to live on site (at least during May-September) and give overall direction to the site and its operations.
2. Ambulatory ability to move about the site and auditory and visual ability to identify and respond to any situation that may arise.
3. Ability to communicate and work with groups and individuals.
4. Cognitive abilities to plan for and coordinate activities at the site.

Authority
Within the policies of MEUCC, the Outdoor Ministry Director will have authority to provide fiscal and property management, operational leadership and best practices of the industry, organizational representation and administrative supervision to camp staff.

Specific Responsibilities
1. Lead the organization, on behalf of the Maine Conference UCC, as a vital and sustainable ministry.
2. Update policies and practices, consistent with the Sustainability Plan (attached) in consultation with the Pilgrim Lodge Leadership Team.
3. Increase usage of Pilgrim Lodge by the Maine Conference, other church organizations, not-for-profit and educational organizations, as well as other partners consistent with Pilgrim Lodge mission.
4. Provide personnel management – hiring, supervision and termination – of all paid and volunteer staff.
5. Provide oversight and management of site and facilities with an emphasis on sustainability.
6. Recruit, train, support and lift up the volunteers as partners in ministry.
7. Operate the camp in compliance with all applicable state and local regulations and ACA standards.
8. Act as on-site retreat host
9. Bring competence and willingness to cover all staff positions as needed.
10. Other items:
Serve as an active member of the Maine Conference staff leadership team;
Additional responsibilities as may be mutually agreed upon with the Conference Minister.

Youth Ministries Director (10-15 hours/week September-April)

Provide a year-round Pilgrim Lodge presence in the Maine Conference by supporting, training, providing programing for youth and young adults and their leaders. Provide creative, transforming faith experiences and opportunities for young people to gather together. Possible areas include social action, worship, theological engagement, exploration of Call to ministry. Create an Advisory Council of youth, young adults, advisors and staff. Activities (outside of summer season) may include Confirmation retreats, youth events, trainings for leaders or other programming to enhance these ministries in the local church and the Maine Conference.
