Responsibilities

Lead a variety of wilderness trips, including flatwater canoeing, white water canoeing, Lake Superior canoeing, and rustic retreats on our main site

Lead open and guided group discussions centered around Christian faith, life in community, and environmental education.

Accept, welcome, and include individuals within a wide range of faith traditions and spiritual beliefs, or lack thereof. (We do not require staff members to identify as Christian.)

Lead and teach wilderness skills, including canoeing, outdoor cooking, and Leave No Trace camping techniques

Take responsibility, usually with a co-guide, for the health, safety, and well-being of small groups of campers and adults

Act as an encouraging role model of compassion for others and care for Creation

Assist with various in-camp duties when not guiding off-site trips, such as site maintenance, hospitality, and on-site food service

Qualifications

Enthusiastic about living and working in the outdoors. (Extensive wilderness experience is not required. Enthusiasm, determination, and positivity are all preferred over previous wilderness experiences.)

Present for the entirety of staff training

At least 19 years of age, or having completed one year of college

Emotionally prepared for hard work in the service of others

Organized and self-motivated; able to work without direct supervision or specific daily direction

A flexible thinker with demonstrated problem-solving ability

Able to work comfortably alone or with others for long periods of time

Able to collaborate and work constructively with others to accomplish short- and long-term objectives

Able to sustain physical activity for several hours at a time (i.e. paddling, hiking, lifting, etc.)

Excited about working with youth and having a positive impact on their lives
