Reports to: Camp Programs Coordinator              Salary: $16.75 - $18.75 per hour

Position Overview: Under the supervision of the Camp Programs Coordinator, the Barn Coordinator shall ensure Barnum Center at Wesley Woods Camp & Retreat Center has a high quality and effective summer camp horse program. Responsible for program design and management, barn staff, and overall equine program accountability. BARN COORDINATOR REQUIREMENTS

  1. Age minimum of 21 years of age.
  2. Current nationally recognized horsemanship certification, such as Certified Horsemanship Association instructional certification or extensive related experience.
  3. Ability to direct and supervise the movement of horses in and out of the barn and lift saddle and tack for horses, lift at least 50 lbs.
  4. Experience in the development and delivery of programs and activities.
  5. Extensive knowledge and experience in taking care of horses and equipment, teaching riding techniques, teaching how to prepare the horses for rides and communicating with campers, staff, Veterinarians, Farriers, and the general public.
  6. Demonstrated ability to supervise others.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with children and families.
  8. A driver’s license and good driving record.
  9. Must be available 24 hours a day to handle equine emergencies that may arise.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Barn Coordinator is responsible for:

  1. Overall management of the equestrian center and the day and overnight camp horse programs.
  2. Development of camp horse programs and continually monitoring of these programs to ensure proper progression of activities and freshness of program ideas.
  3. Implementation of the Barn Leader in Training program and the direct supervision of these staff when in the barn.
  4. Oversee the proper care of the horses and equipment, including scheduling staff to care for the horses on evenings and weekends.
  5. Teaching and overseeing seasonal barn staff in teaching riding techniques, safety procedures, assessment of riding abilities, matching horses to campers and supervision of trail rides.
  6. Monitoring the equestrian center and trails for possible risks and hazards and communicating these to the maintenance staff or Camp Program Coordinator so they may be fixed.
  7. Maintaining the health and safety of campers, members and participants is the #1 priority of Wesley Woods Camp and Retreat Center at all times.
  8. Maintaining the health and safety of the horses is an integral part of this position. Being able to modify programs because of adverse conditions is an important aspect of this position.
  9. Assist campers and participants as they increase their understanding of their natural environment.
  10. Ensure that all applicable Wesley Woods, ACA, local, state and federal regulations concerning the equestrian center are fulfilled.
  11. Recognize campers and participants for their personal growth, exemplary behavior and skill attainment.
  12. Provide feedback and support to barn staff about their job performance continuously. Supervise equestrian staff and volunteers.
  13. Guide and direct staff, campers and participants toward their potential by creating a loving and supportive environment.
  14. Be flexible and assist in all areas of Wesley Woods Camp, as needed and directed.

  3. Campers have learned a new skill (achievement), made a new friend (relationships) and feel a sense of belonging.
  4. Wesley Woods campers and participants having a happy, safe and rewarding experience.
  5. Each staff member and volunteer having a rewarding growth experience.
  6. Positive formal and informal performance reviews.

 

 

SPECIFIC MINISTRY DESCRIPTION

SUMMER PROGRAM (45%)

  • Collaborate with Camp Programs Coordinator to develop a high-quality, hands-on Leadership training program for our Summer Equine Team
  • Daily walk alongside and mentor barn Summer Staff for their leadership development
  • Collaborate with Camp Programs Coordinator to develop and hold summer-camp equine related programs for campers and equine-focused campers
  • Collaborate with Barn Leaders and Assistants to complete equine related programming for campers to maximize their learning, growth and fun while ensuring their safety

 

BARN & EQUINE LEADERSHIP (25%)

  • Implement & supervise safety/risk management protocols for all programs
  • Maintain scheduling of staff, volunteers, lessons, and use of facilities
  • Collaborate with Camp Program Coordinator in training for barn assistants, summer staff, lesson instructors, and barn volunteers
  • Ensure barn assistants are scheduled, trained, and supervised for adequate coverage for the needed work to be completed
  • Provide supervision, guidance, and evaluations to program staff and volunteers
  • Provide an environment that models Christ’s love, grace, and acceptance to all people who come to Wesley Woods Camp and Retreat Center
  • Serve as a positive and inspirational ambassador for Camp Wesley Woods within the community

 

EQUINE CARE, TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT (25%)

  • Assist as needed with daily care for horses including feeding, turnout, stall cleaning, vetting and blanketing
  • Collaborate with Equine Care Coordinator to ensure there is proper tack and equipment needed for equine health, safety and longevity
  • Be on call in the event of an equine emergency and administer first aid as necessary if Equine Care Coordinator is unavailable
  • Collaborate with Equine Care Coordinator on the direction on all horse care for Wesley Woods horses, including wound care, and routine maintenance care, feed requirements and ensuring all nutritional needs are met
  • Collaborate with Equine Care Coordinator to ensure that all horses receive proper training and conditioning that will enable them to be productive and healthy for all equine programming

ADMINISTRATIVE & OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES (5%)

  • Maintain accurate program and administrative records
  • Ensure filing of proper documents
  • Ensure barn facility is ready for all programs. Collaborate or delegate cleaning facility and food service requests and needs
  • Champion our Mission and Core Values to the Program Team & other team members
  • Attend required staff meetings
  • As requested, assist in the development and implementation of Camp Wesley Woods strategic marketing & community development by:

o            Providing content, photos, and information to be used in social media development and posted content to publicize our Summer and programmed event ministries

o            Cultivating relationships with current & potential donors to deepen connections to camp’s Mission and Core Values

  • Schedule programs, facilities, and staff
  • Demonstrates a servant’s heart with integrity, joy, enthusiasm, initiative, self-control, a willingness to learn, a sense of spiritual direction, and the presence of God in their life
