Position Overview:  Lakeshore Camp and Retreat Center’s mission is “Provide ways for ALL to encounter life, love, and the Grace of God.” It has operated for 76 years with a separately incorporated status since 2011 with a covenantal entity relationship with the Tennessee Western Kentucky (TWK) Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. The Interim Director will lead Lakeshore Camp and Retreat Center through an interim season following a successful 30 plus year tenure by an Executive Director and Office Manager husband/ wife team. The Executive Director leaves Lakeshore after his planned retirement was announced to the Board over a year ago. The Interim Director will be responsible for oversight of all aspects of Lakeshore. This position is expected to begin end of 2024 and conclude after approximately nine months in autumn 2025. The Interim Director is not eligible to apply for the settled Executive Director position.

Lakeshore has 300 beds with a budget of approximately $1.3 million. The Interim Director will directly supervise 5 full-time, year-round department heads with a total of 10 full-time year-round staff, 10 part-time/seasonal, and approximately 40 summer staff. The Interim Director will live on-site in housing provided by Lakeshore and be responsible for overnight hosting one to two times a month. As a separately incorporated site, Lakeshore operates with a Board that supervises the Executive Director and will provide supervision of the Interim Director. The Board of Lakeshore Camp and Retreat Center is working with a consulting firm to provide coaching of the Interim Director and Transition/ Search Team for a successful interim season and search for the settled Executive Director.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in the role of Camp, Conference, Retreat Center Director or Executive Director or similar ministry setting
  • Understanding of the role of leader during an interim season
  • Self-awareness and effective communication skills for leading staff and supporters during a time of transition
  • Excellent organizational and managerial skills
  • Ability to collaborate with the TWK Annual Conference maintaining open communication with both the Conference and the Lakeshore Board of Directors
  • A compassionate heart for marginalized and at-risk populations
  • A bachelor’s degree or greater in a related field

Responsibilities:

  • Manage all business and fiscal affairs, maintaining a complete accounting of revenue and expenses for the operations and programs of the camp and retreat ministry as a 501(c)3, non-profit entity
  • Manage the annual budget as prepared by the retiring Executive Director
  • Directly supervise managers of Program, Office, Maintenance, Food Service, and Communications and Development departments
  • Act as on-site host approximately 2 times a month
  • Communicate to Transition/ Search Team observations of ministry as they apply to search for Settled Executive Director
  • Regularly communicate with Board Chair and attend meetings held 4 times a year
  • Schedule NOMADS’ spring projects in consultation with the maintenance staff to identify and carry out key facilities projects
  • Provide hospitality for on-site interviews of final Executive Director candidates
  • Provide training on site for settled Executive Director for one to two weeks
  • Provide calm, mature leadership to all during interim season
