"A Sanctuary of Authenticity"
Heather Withrow, Jumonville, PA
Heather Withrow had always possessed a passion for guiding and inspiring young minds. As a youth leader, she found fulfillment in shaping the lives of the next generation. But it wasn't until 1999, when she stepped into the realm of camping, that her journey truly began to unfold. Her first foray into camping led her to Spring Heights in West Virginia, a place that initially felt remote and isolating. However, Heather's introduction to the United Methodist Camp & Retreat Ministries Association (UMCRM) at the National Gathering that same year changed everything.
At that gathering, Heather discovered a vast network of like-minded individuals, each with their own stories and experiences from camps across the nation. Suddenly, the horizon expanded beyond Spring Heights, offering her a path for career growth and personal development.
Through the years, she found that engaging with UMCRM didn't just provide Heather with professional opportunities; it also cultivated her leadership skills. For over a decade, she served on the UMCRM Design Team, starting as a super volunteer and eventually becoming the co-chair for the event. Heather reflects, "UMCRM made me feel valued and see that I had things to share even as a young professional." Her experiences with the team empowered her to be creative and innovative, especially in fundraising, where she could grow and then support others in the UMCRM community in this area of need.
UMCRM also fostered a sense of belonging and support that transcended professional boundaries. Heather experienced firsthand the depth of connection within the UMCRM community when she faced personal tragedy at one of her camps. The outpouring of love and support from her peers underscored the genuine care and camaraderie that defined UMCRM.
Moreover, Heather found inspiration in the trailblazing female leaders within the UMCRM community. They shattered stereotypes and demonstrated that leadership knows no bounds of age or gender. Their example instilled in Heather the confidence to embrace her own identity as a leader, while being authentic to her fun personality.
Reflecting on her journey, Heather recognizes UMCRM as more than just a professional association—it's a sanctuary of authenticity. Here, leaders are encouraged to be true to themselves, fostering an environment where everyone can thrive. Through UMCRM, Heather discovered that leadership isn't about conforming to a mold; it's about embracing one's unique strengths and qualities.
Today, Heather Withrow serves as the President and CEO of Jumonville in Pennsylvania, a testament to the transformative power of UMCRM. Her journey from a youth leader to the confident and skilled head of a large camp and retreat ministry is a testament to the profound impact of community, support, and authenticity that the UMCRM Association made possible.
