Gene Haning’s passion for outdoor ministry has always been a guiding force in his life. With a background in Boy Scouts and 4H camping, he has long believed in the power of nature to nurture leadership and community. Yet, when he became the Director at Beaver Creek (CO), Gene found himself searching for deeper connections and the kind of professional support that could guide him through the unique world of Methodist camping.

Before encountering the United Methodist Camp and Retreat Ministries (UMCRM) network, Gene was navigating his role largely on his own. His entry into the community began with a visit from Jen Burch, who not only introduced him to the UMCRM network but also helped him connect more deeply with the Mountain Sky Conference. Encouraged by his board, Gene attended his first UMCRM National Gathering, eager for training but also overwhelmed by the vastness of it all. In that moment of uncertainty, Gene met Kevin Witt, whose resources became a lifeline, not just for camp ministry, but for other aspects of his leadership. That connection opened the door to deeper engagement with UMCRM, including his involvement in the Immersion event and even the opportunity to lead workshops at later gatherings.

Through UMCRM, Gene discovered more than just training; he found a community that mirrored the values he held dear. The friendships he cultivated through UMCRM events and more recently through Intentional Leadership Groups (ILG) provided both professional support and lasting fellowship. These relationships—voluntary and free from judgment—offered a sense of belonging that felt unique to the UMCRM network. Unlike other professional organizations he experienced, where involvement might feel obligatory, UMCRM created space for authenticity, where Gene felt comfortable asking for help without fear of scrutiny.

Today, Gene remains firmly rooted in his ministry at Beaver Creek, energized by the connections and camaraderie he has built through UMCRM. Even as Beaver Creek navigates a changing denomination and world, Gene knows that the UMCRM network will always have his back. Whether through the practical insights shared by colleagues or the personal support offered by its people, Gene has found in UMCRM a source of encouragement that sustains him through challenges and reminds him of the joy in ministry.

“UMCRM makes camping ministry fun,” Gene says, with a smile. Thanks to generous donors, the UMCRM platform continues to foster spaces where leaders like Gene can be inspired, thrive, and find fellowship that transcends job descriptions. Your support makes it possible for ministry leaders to flourish in ways that truly make a difference—together.
